And now an oldie but a goodie! The Byrds hat a number one hit in 1965 with the song Turn! Turn! Turn! The song was, in fact, older than that, as it had been written by Pete Seeger and first recorded in 1959. But aside from seven words added by Seeger the lyrics are older still. Way older. The words to the song are taken from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, making the wise King Solomon the oldest person ever to write a rock song, roughly 2950 years ago.
Solomon was led by God to write that all things have their seasons – there is a time to laugh a time to weep, a time to tear down and a time to build, even a time to be born and a time to die. These things are certainly not all under our control. There will be good times, but they do not last forever. There are bad times as well, but they don’t last forever either. We see that all things on earth change, but God is constant forever. We may trust that God is in control, though we may not understand what He’s doing.
Ultimately it is a good thing that the things of this earth do not last forever. We do not trust in the fleeting things of this world, but in the God of all eternity. To those who trust in Him He has promised the forgiveness of sins and everlasting life. And so we put our faith in Him, and repent of our sins, which is to turn from them. Turn! Turn! Turn! I swear it’s not too late.
